As a yogini, sometimes I think I “know it all” about relaxation techniques and tools. This week, I’ve been incredibly impressed by a new experience: FLOTATION THERAPY.

Flotation therapy is the practice of entering an enclosed tub or sensory deprivation tank and becoming buoyant, while partially submerged in 10 inches of clean, body-temperature water, custom-blended with 1,000 pounds of therapeutic epsom salts.

Health benefits of Floating Therapy

Flotation therapy is relaxation through science. Eliminating your sensory overload allows your brain to drift into the half-awake, half-dreaming Theta state, where meditation and creativity flourish. Levels of the stress hormone Cortisol drop, while the feel-good dopamine hormone rises.

  1. Regenerate: floating lowers stress hormones, replenishes neurotransmitters, and releases endorphins, which induces ultra-deep relaxation and provides a zen-like afterglow that can last for days.
  2. Recharge: the womb-like environment provides a euphoric boost in energy, which is ideal for when we’re jet lagged, sleep deprived, or drained from a long work-week.
  3. Relax: effortlessly slip into meditative states, which has a plethora of proven benefits. you’ll feel intensely awake, yet extremely relaxed and clear-headed
  4. Recover: greatly accelerate the body’s ability to heal itself from the effects of stress, intense workouts, late-nights, and overstimulation.
  5. Release: floating will release tension stored in muscles and decompress the spine, which is both soothing and effectively relieves chronic pain

My magical experience

Not knowing anything at all, I was invited to try 1 session of Floating Therapy at Pause Float Studio, in LA. Not only was it one of the most beautiful, relaxing spaces I’ve ever seen, but the whole experience was magical…

As I walked through the doors, my total relaxation experience began: a pristine, thoughtfully designed facility, and warm and knowladgeble staff made me feel welcomed, understood and in good company.

Tamara took me through the benefits of floating as I fuelled up (32 weeks pregnant at this stage 🙂 with the cleanest, more delicious snack bars I’ve ever tasted.

And then I was invited into the 1st step of the process: 15 minutes of Infrared Sauna.

Health benefits of Infrared Technology

It is completely safe and produces the same far infrared heat produced by the sun. Sunlight is a combination of visible and invisible light. The seven colors of the rainbow are visible lights, and infrared rays and ultraviolet rays are invisible lights. It is the far infrared energy that is most beneficial, penetrating the skin and increasing circulation to help rid the body of harmful toxins.  The radiant heat from our sauna surrounds you and penetrates deeply into your joints, muscles and tissues, speeding oxygen flow and increasing circulation. Using our saunas helps to remove impurities from your cells, specifically the cells inside our fat where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals.

At first I was a little nervous stepping into the Sauna while being pregnant… but I felt it was very mild and pleasant. I relaxed completely, laid down and enjoyed the feeling of sweat running through my skin.

After 15 minutes, I was taken to the Floating Room: a private, soundproof room, equipped with either a state-of-the-art pod.

As I entered the water, a special blend of Epsom and imported Dead Sea salts cradled my baby and me. I closed the lid, turned on a Pregnancy-specific guided meditation and laid back.

To my surprise, I floated weightlessly, buoyed by the salts. The body-temperature water relaxed my sense of touch. The lights and sounds faded. I immediately was drawn into the deepest diaphragmatic, yogic breathing. My heartbeat slowed down and I dove into the deepest trance ever.

As I counteracted the effects of gravity, my muscles and connective tissues began to unwind and soften. My joints felt supported and relaxed, and my lower back began to decompress and align.

An hour later, the guided meditation restarted and talked me out of my meditation. I must confess I would have stayed there much longer.

After a shower, I felt relaxed and reenergized: lighter, brighter, sharper. I even felt my baby was very relaxed and had thoroughly enjoyed the experience 🙂

I walked to a relaxation room where a pleasing, hot cup of organic tea, candles and cozy pillows were waiting for me. The perfect way to transition out of the “trance”.

I took my time, hydrated myself with the delicious tea and, still floating, went back to the real world.

All in all, I can totally recommend Floating Therapy as the Ultimate Self-Care Experience.
